IP certification: Protection classes
for electrical divices
Details of the standard
The IP (Ingress Protection) certification provides information on how
well an electrical device is protected against external influences.
It describes the protection against contact, ingress of foreign bodies
and liquids. These protection classes are a globally recognised standard
and play an important role in the selection of devices for different areas
of application.
Meaning of the IP protection classes
- First code number (foreign body protection): Indicates how well
the device is protected against contact and penetrating solids (e.g. dust).
The scale ranges from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust-tight). - Second code number (liquid protection): Describes the protection
against water and other liquids, from 0 (no protection) to 9K
(high pressure and steam jet cleaners).
Typical examples
- IP44: Protection against solid foreign bodies larger than 1 mm and splash
water from all directions. - IP67: Dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water.
- IP69K: Protection against high-pressure and steam jet cleaning, ideal for
demanding industrial environment
Why is IP certification important?
The protection class helps to select electrical devices specifically for special
environments, whether for use in dusty industrial halls, in damp outdoor areas
or even under water. The clear classification ensures the safety and durability of the
device.
